What are Dental Implants? A dental implant is a tapered post, usually made of titanium, used to replace a tooth’s natural roots. When a tooth becomes damaged or decayed and needs to be extracted, the entire tooth (crown and roots) are removed. This leaves a space in the mouth which can be uncomfortable and hinder many everyday activities such as chewing and speaking properly. A dental implant is the closest you can get to natural healthy teeth.
How long does the implant process take? The dental implant process can be broken down into 3 phases which can take between 5-8 months to complete.
Phase 1 – Evaluation and preparation. This includes a CT scan where the dentist will evaluate your bone levels and see if you’re a good candidate for an implant. Once you’ve been cleared for an implant you will have the tooth extracted and bone grafting placed (if necessary). Phase one can take anywhere from 3-6 months to complete. Once the area is healed you can proceed to phase 2.
Phase 2- Placement of Dental Implant. This procedure takes about 1-2 hours to complete. Once placed the area needs to heal. During this time the titanium post that was placed will heal and merge with the surrounding bone tissue. The healing process can take anywhere from 3-6 months.
Phase 3- The crown is placed. Once the implant site has healed an impression or scan is taken and a tooth is created in the size shape and color that fits your mouth specifically. Once the crown is made it is placed and the implant process is over.
